Warhawk Invite Bracket/Results
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team won the Warhawk Invite Saturday capturing gold in three flights and silver in three. The tournament format consisted of three singles flights and three doubles flights with teams scoring points based on finish in each flight.
The Warhawks totaled 48 team points, besting second-place Grinnell by just four points. UW-Eau Claire finished third (34), followed by Augustana and Carthage (23), UW-La Crosse (16) and UW-Oshkosh (10).
Bethany Marshall (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) clinched the invitational win for UW-W with her title match victory over Grinnell's Utsah Kaira, 8-5. Her path to the No. 2 singles title included a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over UW-Oshkosh's Codelia Damkot and a 6-7(5), 7-5, 15-13 win over Grinnell's Anika Sheth in the semifinal.
Faith Nosek (Oconomowoc, Wis./BVA) registered three wins at No. 3 singles to go undefeated on the day. She opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Augustana's Grace Molloy before topping Sierra Sonnemaker of Carthage by the same score. Her title match was a 6-0, 6-2 route of Eau Claire's Olivia Herzog.
The Warhawks' third title came at No. 2 doubles. UW-W's pairing of
Kasey Schlicht (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) and
Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) cruised to back-to-back 8-1 victories over the doubles teams from Oshkosh and Eau Claire. In the title match, Schlicht and Ha took down Erin Jarvis and Lily Perrin of Grinnell 8-4.
Sarah Ferguson (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and
MacKenzie Lindow (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) also competed at No. 2 doubles for the Warhawks. The pair won their first match 8-6 before falling in the third-place match 8-2.
Whitewater registered runner-up finishes in the three other flights. At No. 1 singles,
Gianna Nikoleit (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over La Crosse's Kellie Hierl. She advanced to the semifinal with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Xingchen Liu of Carthage before falling in the final 6-4, 6-2 to Sabrina Tang.
Molly Asfeld (Waukesha, Wis./West) also competed at No. 1 singles going 2-1 on the day for the consolation final.
At No. 1 doubles, UW-W duo of
Autumn Bruno (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield Whitnall) and
Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) picked up their first two wins over an Eagle squad and Carthage pair by a score of 8-2 in each match. UW-Eau Claire won the title by a score of 8-4.
The No. 3 doubles combination of
Gracie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) and
Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) bested Augustana's duo 8-6 and Eau Claire's team 8-1 before falling to Grinnell's Mira Manchanda and Kalea Martin 8-1 in the final.
