Second Half Comeback Falls Short at Wartburg

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team fell to a solid Wartburg squad 3-2 on the road Monday night.

The Knights, who have a win over a top 15 team this season, took a big lead with three goals in the first half. Wartburg only outshot the Warhawks by two while UW-Whitewater had the advantage in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.

The Warhawks turned the tide in the second half. With a hefty advantage in shots and corners, UW-W battled their way back into the contest. The defense also stiffened, not allowing a shot by the Wartburg offense until the final 16 minutes of the second half.

Faizan Mohuiddin netted the Warhawks' first goal of the contest in the 52nd minute. Mariano Carini (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) and Andres Villarreal (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) were both credited with assists on the goal. Mohuiddin struck again in the 66th minute. Jalen Holley (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) set up his teammate perfectly with a chip from the right post, over the keeper and back across goal to just inside the far post. Mohuiddin had an open shot at net and capitalized with an easy redirection off his right boot to pull UW-W to within one, 3-2.

The Warhawks dominated time of possession holding the ball in their offensive end minutes for minutes at a time utilizing the sidelines perfectly to work throw ins closer to the box. Still, despite a number of good opportunities, the equalizer was illusive.

Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) and Matthew Vollmer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) split time in net for UW-W with King recording four saves.
