The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater opened the 2022 season with an exciting 2-0 win over Webster at the Worldwide Technology Soccer Park in St. Louis, Missouri Thursday evening. Freshman
Cooper Re (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) registered a pair of goals with less than two minutes apart to seal the win.
The Warhawks dominated offensively holding possession in the Gorlocks defensive zone for the majority of the game. UW-W held an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes but neither team could best the opposing keeper.
UW-Whitewater continued to press forward in the second half registering a couple of fantastic offensive opportunities without finding paydirt.
Re broke the stalemate with just under 20 minutes to play in the contest.
Alec Willett (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) settled the ball just outside the box. With a defender on his back, Willett turned and found Re with his left foot. A great first touch from Re had him behind the only defender left for Webster leaving a one-on-one with the keeper. Re opted for a low shot off the outside of his right boot that snuck by the sliding Webster keeper and inside the right post for the Warhawks' first goal of the season.
Just over a minute later, Re struck again, this time off an assist from
Mariano Carini (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) to extend the UW-W lead to 2-0 and seal the win.
Re's goals in the 71st and 73rd minute bolstered the fast-paced Warhawk offense. UW-Whitewater held a 17-8 advantage in shots on goal and 10-4 sway in corner kicks. Defensively,
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) made four saves in the complete game in goal.
The Warhawks' opened weekend continues with a game at Monmouth Saturday, September 3 at 10 a.m. UW-Whitewater wraps up the busy weekend slate with a 3 p.m. kickoff at Knox College Sunday.
