The No. 36 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 12th consecutive season with a 5-0 victory Thursday against Illinois Tech in the first match of the NCAA Whitewater Regional at the Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex.
The Warhawks (20-4 overall) advance to face No. 35 Grinnell (Iowa) on Friday at 10 a.m. in Whitewater.
In Thursday's dual, UW-Whitewater swept the three doubles matches for a 3-0 lead.
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) and
Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) combined for an 8-1 triumph at the second position, while
Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) and
Bryce Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) teamed up for an 8-4 win at the third slot.
Autumn Bruno (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield Whitnall) and
Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) were forced to a tiebreaker at the first position before edging Morgan Colbert and Kylie Hance by an 8-7 (3) score.
Rueth and
Elsie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) were accounted for the final margin at the Nos. 5 and 6 singles spots, respectively. Rueth claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory and Ha earned a 6-2, 6-2 triumph. All other matches were abandoned once team decision was reached.
The Warhawks split their regular season duals against Grinnell (20-6), topping the Pioneers 7-2 on March 12 in Lake Geneva before falling 5-4 on April 2 at the Midwest Invitational in Madison.
