The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team concluded the regular season Sunday with a 5-4 victory at No. 31 Kalamazoo (Mich.) in a non-conference dual.
The Warhawks (20-2 overall) used a strong start in doubles play to top the Hornets in a match-up of two of the top eight teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region rankings.
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) posted an 8-3 triumph at No. 1 doubles, while
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) collaborated for an 8-3 win at No. 3.
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) were last off the doubles court with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 to give UW-W a 3-0 lead.
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) was first on the board in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at the sixth position. Kalamazoo took the next two matches before Goltz clinched the dual with a 7-5, 6-4 win at the fifth slot.
UW-Whitewater's 20 dual victories are the most since the 2015-16 season, when the team finished 23-7 overall.
The Warhawks host The College of New Jersey, ranked 30th in the nation, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex.
