Seven members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team were named 2021-22 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-America.
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington),
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point),
Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect),
Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls),
Alex Barbarise (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community),
Tyler Klein (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) and
Ryan Riser (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) qualified for recognition by carrying at least a 3.2 grade point average on a 4.0 scale for the previous full academic year. The competitive component requires that each wrestler win more than 67 percent of their matches and/or compete in half of the Warhawks' scheduled NCAA events.
In addition, the Warhawks finished 20th among Division III schools with a collective GPA of 3.560.
UW-Whitewater tied for 17th at the NCAA Division III Championship behind Shinhoster's run to the national championship at 184 pounds. The team placed fifth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship and seventh at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional.
Shinhoster, now a four-time NWCA Scholar All-American, swept the WIAC, NCAA Upper Midwest and NCAA Division III national championships. He finished his standout season with a 32-2 record and was named the WIAC Wrestling Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete and the WIAC Wrestler of the Year.
Burford, a two-year Scholar All-American, qualified for the national tournament by placing third at 149 pounds at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional. He finished as runner-up at the conference tournament and tallied a 26-7 record for the year.
Vedner registered a 20-7 mark for the season after placing third at the WIAC Championship and fourth at the regional tournament at 174 pounds. Porgorzelski (15-12) collects his second Scholar All-America award after finishing fourth in the conference and eighth in the region at 133 pounds, while Barbarise (12-7) is a Scholar All-American for the second time after competing at 125.
Klein and Riser each concluded their first year with the program. Klein turned in a 14-8 record for the year at 125 pounds and Riser finished 19-13 with a fifth-place conference finish at 174.
A total of 451 individuals from 90 NCAA Division III institutions garnered Scholar All-America accolades.
