The No. 34 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team competed for the first and final time of the spring on its outdoor home court Sunday afternoon, defeating regionally ranked Coe (Iowa) 8-1 in a dual match on Senior Day presented by Educators Credit Union at the Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex.
The Wahawks (15-1) honored seniors
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville),
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) following the match. Fellow senior
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) was not in attendance and will be recognized on a future date.
Gray and
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) earned the first decision for UW-Whitewater, combining for an 8-4 triumph at the No. 1 doubles slot. After the Kohawks (10-7) took the next match,
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) paired for an 8-7 victory at the No. 3 spot.
Mitchell picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at the fifth singles position to give the Warhawks a 3-1 advantage.
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) recorded a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 before Gray clinched the dual with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the fourth position.
Zakowski added to the margin with a 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 1 position. Pietila tallied a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 6 and Lindwall completed the dual with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2.
UW-Whitewater visits Principia (Ill.) Friday at 4 p.m.
