No. 10 Baseball Sweeps WIAC Twin Bill

The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team extended its win streak to six games Saturday afternoon with two victories against Finlandia (Mich.) at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
 
The Warhawks (21-6 overall, 13-3 WIAC) topped the Lions 15-2 in seven innings before finishing the day with an 11-4 triumph.
 
In the opener, UW-Whitewater scored it five of its six at-bats, including a six-run fifth inning, and held Finlandia (3-25, 0-18) to four hits in the contest.
 
Designated hitter Alex Najera (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) posted two hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Left fielder Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) tallied two hits, one run scored and three RBIs and shortstop Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) posted three hits and two runs scored.
 
Right fielder Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) registered two hits, one run scored and two RBIs and first baseman Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) plated a pair of runs.
 
Westin Muir (Highlands Ranch, Colo./St. Charles North (Ill.)) improved to 6-1 on the year with seven strikeouts over five innings. Eli Frank (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) tossed a pair of shutout innings in relief, striking out three.
 
Paget started the scoring with an RBI groundout in the first inning. After the Lions tied the game, UW-W took the lead for good on Scolan's run-scoring double to left in the second.
 
In the third, Paget hit an RBI triple to left center, DeMeyer scored on a wild pitch and catcher Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
 
The Warhawks' six-run fifth inning include a run-scoring double by Norton, a run-scoring single by Scolan, a two-run single by Najera, an RBI double by second baseman Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and an RBI single by DeMeyer.
 
In the sixth, Scolan hit a sacrifice fly, Najera knocked in a run with a base hit and pinch hitter Karsen Rupnow (Ixonia, Wis./Oconomowoc) plated two with a two-out single to right.
 
In Game 2, the Lions led 2-0 through 4 1/2 innings before UW-Whitewater plated eight runs in the fifth, including a solo homer by Paget and a three-run shot by Norton. Centerfielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) plated one with a single and designated hitter Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) added a two-run double in the frame. Vomhof capped the big inning with a safety squeeze bunt.
 
Paden finished with two hits, one walk, two runs scored and four RBIs. Paget and DeMeyer each posted two hits, one run scored and one RBI, while Campbell collected three hits, one run scored and one RBI. Frazer recorded three hits and two runs scored.
 
Kade Lancour (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) improved to 6-0 with the win on the mound, striking out eight over 5 2/3 innings. Nick Rector (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional) pitched the final three innings to earn his second save of the year.
 
The Warhawks wrap up their four-game set against Finlandia Sunday starting at 12 p.m.
