Offense Propels No. 10 Baseball to Sweep

The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team extended its win streak to eight games and swept its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series Sunday by defeating Finlandia (Mich.) in back-to-back games at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
 
The Warhawks (23-6 overall, 15-3 WIAC) bested the Lions 13-1 in the first game and 14-4 in the second. Both games were decided after seven innings by run rule.
 
In the opener, six UW-W batters tallied multiple hits and three pitchers teamed up for a 10-strikeout performance.
 
Right fielder Alex Najera (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) reached base four times with three hits and one walk while scoring three runs. Designated hitter Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) recorded three hits, including a two-run homer in the second inning, and added two runs scored and five runs batted in.
 
Centerfielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) and catcher Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) finished with two hits, one run scored and one RBI apiece. Third baseman Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) and left fielder Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) each registered two hits and two runs scored.
 
Cam Anfang (Sullivan, Wis./Jefferson) picked up his third victory of the year, surrendering three hits and one walk with four strikeouts over four innings. Max Huseboe (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) struck out four in two innings of relief and Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
 
In Game 2, Finlandia (3-28, 0-20) took the lead in the top of the first but never led again after UW-Whitewater scored twice in the bottom half of the opening frame.
 
Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) highlighted the offense with three hits, including two homers, and finished with three runs scored and three RBIs. Right fielder Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) totaled three hits, one walk, three runs scored and two RBIs, while Paden knocked in three runs to go with one hit and one run scored.
 
Najera reached base three times with two hits and one walk and scored two runs. Korman tallied two hits and two runs scored and Scolan generated two hits, one walk, one run scored and two RBIs.
 
Shortstop Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) and pinch hitter Reese Fetherston (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) also plated runs for the Warhawks.
 
Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) improved to 3-1 on the mound with a 10-strikeout showing over six innings. Berendt struck out the side in relief in the seventh inning.
 
UW-Whitewater hosts No. 16 UW-Stevens Point for a doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Miller Stadium.
