The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team used a strong start Saturday afternoon to defeat in-state rival UW-Eau Claire 6-3 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference West Division dual in Eau Claire.
The Warhawks (18-2 overall, 2-0 NJAC) stormed out to a 3-0 advantage thanks to three doubles victories.
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) started UW-W scoring with an 8-3 triumph at the second position.
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) doubled the lead with an 8-4 win at the third position.
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) trailed 7-6 at the first position before tying the set and claiming the tiebreaker for an 8-7 (4) victory.
Goltz was the first to score in singles for UW-Whitewater, posting a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at the No. 4 slot. Calabria clinched the dual with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3.
Zakowski capped the scoring with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1.
The Warhawks look to clinch the NJAC West Division title Sunday against SUNY Oneonta (N.Y.). First serve is slated for 12 p.m. in Eau Claire.
