Track and Field Teams Compete at UW-Platteville, WashU

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2022 outdoor season Saturday at UW-Platteville's Pioneer Opener.
 
On the women's side, Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) won the pole vault and broke a program record with her height of 12-05.25 (3.79 meters). Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) took the 1,500-meter run in 4:56.19 and teamed with Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy), Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) and Jenna Cooper (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:27.36.
 
Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker) and Rebecca Lawrence (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) were runners-up in their respective events. Shelton placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.43 seconds, while Lawrence's height of 5-00.25 (1.53 meters) was good for second place in the high jump.
 
For the men, UW-Whitewater went 1-2 in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles. Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) finished first with a time of 14.97, while Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) recorded a 15.05 to finish second overall in the preliminary race.
 
Victor Rinaldi (Medford, Wis./Medford) placed second in the 100-meter dash with his personal record time of 10.72 seconds, while Chris Bitz (Brookfield, Wis./East) finished as runner-up in the pole vault with his height of 14-00.50 (4.28 meters). Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) added a second-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 169-04 (51.61 meters).
 
On Friday night, David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) and Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) each broke 30 minutes in the 10,000-meter run to earn top 10 marks in the nation. Fassbender broke Tom Hoffman's 53-year-old school record with a 29:45.93, while Schlender registered the No. 3 time in program history with a 29:57.41.
 
UW-Whitewater hosts the Rex Foster Twilight Friday at 12 p.m. at Rex Foster Track.
