Women’s Tennis Splits Matches at Midwest Invite

The No. 33 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team finished 1-1 Friday in matches played against nationally ranked opponents on the first day of the Midwest Invitational at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
 
The Warhawks (16-3 overall) defeated No. 30 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) by a 6-3 score before falling against No. 1 Chicago by a 9-0 count.
 
Against Gustavus Adolphus (8-6), Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) and Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) combined for an 8-3 triumph at No. 2 doubles. The Gusties claimed the remaining two matches for a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
 
Gianna Nikoleit (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) tied the dual at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Bethany Marshall (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) gave the Warhawks the lead with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 4.
 
Gustavus tied the dual before Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) gave UW-Whitewater the advantage for good with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the No. 2 slot. Ha clinched the dual with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 slot.
 
Rueth accounted for the final margin with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win at the sixth position.
 
In the dual against Chicago (12-1), Marshall and Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) played a competitive match at No. 3 doubles before falling 8-4.
 
The Maroons took all six singles matches. Marshall took five games in her opening set at the No. 4 slot before eventually falling in the match.
 
The Warhawks will take on Grinnell (Iowa) for third place Saturday at 11 a.m. in Madison. Grinnell is ninth in the latest ITA Central Region rankings.
