The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the 2021-22 season Saturday, falling 7-2 at regional powerhouse Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.).
The Warhawks (10-1 overall) were defeated in all three doubles matches.
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) pushed their match at No. 3 to a tiebreaker but were edged 8-7 (3).
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) got UW-Whitewater on the board in singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the second position against Nick Aney of Gustavus.
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) turned in UW-W's other team point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the fifth position.
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) split his first two sets at No. 1 against Indraneel Raut but was edged 19-17 in a thrilling super tiebreaker to decide the match.
The Warhawks host Augustana (Ill.) next Sunday, March 13, at 12 p.m. at Lake Geneva Tennis.
