The No. 6 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team wrapped up a four-game series against No. 17 Trinity Saturday with a 9-7 victory at Wolff Municipal Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
The Warhawks (2-2 overall) took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the sixth inning and limited the Tigers to one run over the final four frames.
Left fielder
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) tallied two hits and two runs batted to lead UW-W offensively. Catcher
Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) posted two hits, one run scored and one RBI, and second baseman
Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) scored a pair of runs. Designated hitter
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) reached base three times with one hit and a pair of walks.
Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) and
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) split pitching duties for UW-W. Fox pitched the first 4 1/3 innings, striking out two over that span, and Berendt earned the win with six strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.
UW-Whitewater was first on the board in the top of the third. Frazer drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a run-scoring double down the left field line by right fielder
Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander).
The Warhawks added two more in the top of the fourth on Scolan's two-run double that plated Korman and first baseman
Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West).
Trinity (5-5) took a 6-3 advantage in the bottom of the fifth, but UW-Whitewater responded in the top of the sixth. Norton scored from third on a wild pitch, and third baseman
Austin Wessel (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) knocked an RBI single to center and came around to score on an error. Frazer scored the final run of the frame on a wild pitch.
UW-W added insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an error and the top of the eighth on a two-out, run-scoring base hit to left by Norton.
The Tigers brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Berendt induced a fielder's choice to end the contest.
The Warhawks begin Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge March 16 against Rhodes (Tenn.) at Blue Wahoo Stadium in Pensacola, Fla.
