No. 6 Baseball Splits on Second Day in Texas

The No. 6 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team continued its trip to San Antonio, Texas, on Friday by finishing 1-1 in a doubleheader against No. 17 Trinity.

The Warhawks (1-2 overall) took the opener 7-3 before falling by a 10-9 score in Game 2.

In Game 1, UW-Whitewater took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. UW-W's pitchers left 17 runners on base in the contest.

Second baseman Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) finished 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in and pitched one inning of scoreless relief. Centerfielder Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) posted two hits, two runs scored and one RBI and catcher Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) tallied two hits, one run scored and one RBI.

Kade Lancour (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) earned the win on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings of work. He was relieved by Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), who allowed one run over 2 1/3 frames, and Eli Frank (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port), who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless.

The Tigers (5-4) plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first for the early lead. Designated hitter Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) led off the top of the second with a walk and came around to score on an error before third baseman David Rubin (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Both teams left multiple runners aboard in the third before UW-W took the lead for good in the fourth. Shortstop Darryl Jackson (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) plated a run with a one-out single down the right field line, and Vomhof added another run on a double to left with two outs.

Run-scoring hits by Campbell and Vomhof made it 6-2 in the top of the sixth, and after Trinity pulled to within three, UW-Whitewater added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Korman.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before Vomhof induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the contest.

In the nightcap, the Warhawks plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning for a 9-6 advantage before Trinity returned the favor with four of its own in the bottom half to walk off the game.

Vomhof, Norton and right fielder Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) registered two hits apiece to lead the offense. DeMeyer, Norton and designated hitter Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) each knocked in two runs, while Vomhof, Norton and left fielder Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) each scored twice.

Trey Bretl (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) took the loss on the mount for UW-W. Cam Anfang (Sullivan, Wis./Jefferson) started and pitched 4 1/3 innings before being relieved by Nick Rector (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional), who tossed 3 2/3.

UW-Whitewater closes out its four-game set against Trinity Saturday at 11 a.m. The final game of the series will be played at Wolff Municipal Stadium, home of the San Antonio Missions, a Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
