The No. 14 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team was held scoreless for the first four innings before coming alive in the middle innings Monday for an 8-4 victory against Centre (Ky.) at Blue Wahoos Stadium in Pensacola, Fla.
The Warhawks (6-2), who have now won five consecutive games, tallied three in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to back a strong pitching performance from
Westin Muir (Highlands Ranch, Colo./St. Charles North (Ill.)), who scattered six hits and struck out seven over seven-plus innings for his second win of the year.
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) relieved Muir and tossed two shutout frames.
Right fielder
Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) finished 2-for-5 with one run scored and three runs batted in. Shortstop
Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) scored three runs and added one hit, and left fielder
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) scored twice.
Centre (9-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third and held the advantage until the bottom of the fifth. UW-Whitewater took advantage of a pair of errors for its first two runs of the inning. DeMeyer collected one RBI on a ground ball and first baseman
Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) plated a run with a base hit later in the frame.
DeMeyer's two-run single keyed the sixth inning, giving UW-W a 5-1 advantage. The Warhawks added two more on an error for a 7-1 lead.
The Colonels plated three in the eighth to draw within three, but second baseman
Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) knocked a two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom half for an insurance run.
Berendt tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete the victory.
UW-Whitewater continues the trip with a game against Grinnell (Iowa) Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
