The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team competed Friday on the first day of the NCAA Division III Championships at Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington), the No. 5 seed at 184 pounds, punched his ticket to the semifinals with a pair of 10-0 major decisions. After topping Charles Baczek of Wabash (Ind.) in the first round, Shinhoster topped No. 4 seed Chibueze Chukwuezi of Ithaca (N.Y.) to clinch All-America honors for the second time in his career.
Shinhoster (30-2) will face top-seeded Shane Liegel of Loras (Iowa) in his semifinal bout.
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) dropped a pair of closely contested decisions at 149 pounds. The third-place finisher at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference runner-up, Burford finishes his season with a 26-7 record.
Action resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
