The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team recorded two victories Saturday at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva to start the 2022 spring season.
The Warhawks (2-0 overall) edged NAIA opponent Cardinal Stritch 4-3 before defeating Illinois Tech by a 9-0 score.
Against Cardinal Stritch (0-1), UW-Whitewater won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point in the match, which was played under Division I rules.
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) teamed up for a 7-6 (6) triumph at No. 2 doubles, while
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) combined for a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Warhawks picked up three more points in singles play to win the dual.
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) collected a 7-5, 6-3 win at the first singles position, and Goltz edged Alejandro Martinez 7-5, 6-7 (2), 1-0 (10-3) at the fourth position in one of four singles matches decided by a third-set super tiebreaker.
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) clinched the dual for UW-Whitewater with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) triumph at the sixth position.
In the match against Illinois Tech (0-2), UW-W dropped a combined six games in three doubles victories.
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) topped Alann Torres and Jordan Lauer 8-1 at No. 1, and Mitchell and
Parker Hearne (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) won by the same score at No. 2.
Josh Baldwin (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) and
Noah Wankerl (Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 triumph at No. 3.
Baldwin compiled a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the sixth singles slot. Goltz and Pietila won by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores at the first and second positions, respectively.
Ridley Aranda (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) contributed a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at the fifth spot. Adkisson and
Josh Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) each claimed third-set super tiebreakers for victories at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
The Warhawks return to the courts next weekend for the Warhawk Invitational. UW-Whitewater starts the tournament Friday against Wheaton (Ill.) at 5 p.m.
