The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team continued its strong start to the spring season Saturday with consecutive 9-0 victories against Carthage and Dubuque (Iowa) in duals played at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva, Wis.
The Warhawks (10-0 overall) took all three tightly contested doubles matches to start the dual against Carthage (8-1).
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) put UW-W on the board with an 8-6 triumph at the No. 3 position.
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) combined for an 8-5 win at No. 2 and
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at No. 1.
Lindwall and Zakowski were first to finish in singles play, putting UW-Whitewater ahead 5-0 to clinch the dual. Lindwall registered a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the second spot, while Zakowski tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win at the top slot.
Goltz topped Chris Mitev at No. 4 by a 6-4, 6-0 score, while Gray defeated Nicolas Welker 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5. Calabria earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 and Mitchell shook off a second-set loss for a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) triumph at No. 6.
In the match against Dubuque (1-5), the Warhawks' doubles contingent didn't drop a game.
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) were winners at the first position,
Josh Baldwin (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) and
Noah Wankerl (Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie) were victorious ad the second position, and
Josh Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) and
Ridley Aranda (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) teamed up for a shutout at the third position.
Aranda and Wankerl didn't drop a game on their way to straight-set singles wins at the Nos. 6 and 5 singles spots, respectively. Adkisson (No. 2), Baldwin (No. 4), Guillermo (No. 3) and Pietila (No. 1) each captured victories in straight sets.
UW-Whitewater makes its first road trip of the spring next Saturday, March 5, to take on Gustavus Adolphus.
