The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams combined to win three event titles Friday on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships (presented by Culver's) at UW-Platteville.
The Warhawk men are fourth with 41 team points through seven events scored, while the women are seventh with 17 points through eight events scored.
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) highlighted the day for the women with a record-setting performance. She broke school record previously held by Melanie Pilon (2013) and added a facility record in the pole vault with a personal-best height of 12-08.00 (3.86 meters), good for her first career individual championship and her third All-WIAC honor. Holland currently ranks among the nation's top five in the event.
The women's distance medley relay team of
Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger),
Kylie Jacobs (Watertown, Wis./Watertown),
Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy) and
Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) combined for honorable mention all-conference accolades with a third-place finish, tallying a time of 12:37.40.
Rebecca Lawrence (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) earned a spot on the podium in the high jump, tying for seventh with her personal record height of 5-00.25 (1.53 meters).
Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker) qualified for Saturday's 60-meter dash final with her time of 7.95 seconds, good for eighth place in the preliminary race.
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) led the men with a victory in the 5,000-meter run, his first career title and fourth all-conference accolade. He crossed the finish line in a facility-record time of 14:26.40, good for a top 15 mark in NCAA Division III.
The men's distance medley relay squad of
Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion),
Luke Zanis (St. Charles, Ill./North),
Andrew Lohse (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) and
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) combined to top the podium with a time of 10:15.93, which ranks just outside of the top 15 in the nation.
Other All-WIAC finishers included
Curtis Pfeil (West Bend, Wis./West), who finished as runner-up in the long jump, and
Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson), who placed third in the shot put. Pfeil recorded his career best distance of 24-00.00 (7.31 meters), good for seventh in NCAA Division III, while Martin established his personal record in the shot put with a toss of 50-10.00 (15.49 meters), which ranks just outside the nation's top 20.
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) and
Chris Bitz (Brookfield, Wis./East) also claimed top-eight finishes. Krause placed fourth in the 1-mile run in 4:16.05, while Bitz earned seventh place in the pole vault after clearing 14-10.75 (4.54 meters).
Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and
Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) qualified second and fifth, respectively, for Saturday's final in the 60-meter hurdles. Thomas crossed the finish line in 8.29 seconds, while Keefover tallied a time of 8.39 seconds.
Jack McGinn (Madison, Wis./McFarland) ranks seventh through four events in the heptathlon with 2,431 points.
