The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team closed the Warhawk Invitational Sunday with consecutive 9-0 victories against Luther (Iowa) and Grinnell (Iowa) at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva.
The Warhawks (5-0 overall) completed the weekend with a 3-0 mark.
Against Luther (1-4), UW-Whitewater took all three doubles matches.
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) paired for an 8-3 triumph at No. 2, and
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) combined for an 8-5 win at No. 3. The Warhawks' No. 1 pair of
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) trailed 7-6 before tying the pro set at 7-7 before capturing the tiebreaker for an 8-7 (5) victory.
Goltz gave UW-W a four-point lead with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the fourth singles position. Zakowski clinched the dual with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the first position.
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) was next on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the third position, while Lindwall came back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set for a 6-2, 7-5 triumph at the second position.
Mitchell didn't surrender a game and Pietila allowed a combined two games in straight set wins at the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
In the match against Grinnell (2-3), Gray and Zakowski earned their second victory of the day at No. 1 doubles, this one by an 8-2 score. Calabria and Lindwall combined for an 8-3 triumph at No. 2, and Mitchell and Goltz made it 3-0 with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Gray collected a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles and Goltz clinched the dual with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 3.
Lindwall and Mitchell each picked up straight set wins at the Nos. 1 and 5 spots, respectively. Calabria was next on the board, claiming a super tiebreaker for a 6-2, 6-7 (0), 1-0 (10-7) victory at No. 2. Pietila finished off the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 6.
UW-Whitewater hosts Millikin (Ill.) at 12:15 p.m. and Concordia Wisconsin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Lake Geneva Tennis.
