The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams welcomed several of the nation's top teams to Kachel Fieldhouse Saturday as they hosted the Midwest Elite Invitational.
The Warhawk men finished third with 102.25 team points, while the women placed eighth with 13 team points.
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) and
Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) led the UW-W women with top-five finishes in their respective events. Holland tied for second in the pole vault with a height of 11-08.00 (3.56 meters), while De La Cerda ran a personal record time of 10:37.73 in the 3,000-meter run to place fourth.
Other top performers included
Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker). Missiaen tied for ninth in the high jump with a height of 4-10.25 (1.48 meters), while Shelton placed 12th in both the 60-meter dash in 8.04 seconds and the 200-meter dash in a career-best 26.90 seconds.
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) and
Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) finished 1-2 in the 5,000-meter run, each entering the top 10 in the nation with their performances. Fassbender broke both the school and facility records with his career-best 14:14.34, topping Brian Butzler's previous record of 14:21.70 from 2011. Schlender ran a personal record 14:26.80, the third-fastest PR in school history.
Josh Krystosek (Palmyra, Wis./Palmyra-Eagle) and
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) also contributed event wins for the Warhawks. Krystosek made his indoor season debut in the high jump with a 6-07.00 (2.01 meters), while Krause tallied a career best and entered the top 15 in the nation in the 1-mile run with his time of 4:11.81, the third-fastest PR time in the event in program history.
Shelvin Garrett II (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) finished as runner-up in the triple jump with a season-best 47-05.00 (14.45 meters).
Curtis Pfeil (West Bend, Wis./West) and
Brayden Zettle (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) also finished among the top five. Pfeil recorded a 46-10.25 (14.28 meters), and Zettle collected a 45-07.75 (13.91 meters).
Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) vaulted into the top 15 in NCAA Division III with his season-best toss of 59-00.00 (17.98 meters) to place second in the weight throw. He also finished as runner-up in the shot put with a season-best 49-11.75 (15.23 meters).
Victor Rinaldi (Medford, Wis./Medford) registered a pair of personal records, finishing fourth in the prelims of the 60-meter dash with a 6.89 and second in the 200-meter dash final with a 22.12, currently the 15th-fastest time in the nation.
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) placed third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:19.53, good for a top 10 mark in Division III.
Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) earned a spot among the nation's top 15 times with his personal best 8.24 in the 60-meter hurdles, good for fourth place at the meet.
The Warhawks head to North Central's F. Lee Slick Invitational Friday starting at 4 p.m. in Naperville, Ill.
