The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team continued its strong play to start the 2022 spring season Friday with a 7-2 victory against Wheaton (Ill.) on the first day of the Warhawk Invite at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva.
The Warhawks (3-0 overall) took two of three doubles matches for a 2-1 match lead after the doubles round.
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) were first on the board with an 8-1 triumph at the first position.
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) followed suit with an 8-4 win at the second position.
Zakowski posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles to increase UW-W's lead to 3-1.
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) recorded a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 4, and
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) clinched the dual with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Lindwall scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 2, and Calabria claimed a third-set super tiebreaker in a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) triumph at No. 2.
UW-Whitewater hosts Luther (Iowa) and Grinnell (Iowa) on Sunday at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively, to finish up the tournament.
