The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team fell to UW-La Crosse 2-1 at Fiskum Field Saturday evening.
The Eagles, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season champions, went unbeaten in league play to secure the top seed into the
WIAC Tournament. The Warhawks secured the No. 2 seed in the tournament with a 4-2-1 mark in conference play this season. UWW will host a semifinal matchup on Thursday, November 3 at 6 p.m. at Fiskum Field against the highest remaining seed among UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Eau Claire.
The Warhawks took the lead in the contest Saturday with
Nina Malak (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) finding the back of the net in the 38th minute.
Jessica Smeltzer (Schaumburg, Ill./James B. Conant) registered the assist on the score.
On the other side of the break, the Eagles notched the equalizer on a scrum in front of goal. UWW turned away a few shots in the flurry but one made it through in the 50th minute. That score held until the 79th minute when the Eagles took the 2-1 lead.
UWW outshot the Eagles in the game 9-6 including a 3-2 sway in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even 3-3.
