Warhawks Fall in Regular Season Finale

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's volleyball team dropped their regular season finale to Cornell 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 21-25, 25-23, 17-15) in Russell Arena Saturday evening.

The Warhawks were more efficient offensively hitting .182 compared to Cornell's .143, but the Rams had the edge in blocks.

The decisive fifth set was a thriller, back-and-forth battle between the two squads. Cornell took an early 5-2 lead but the Warhawks worked back to even 6-6. The teams traded points with neither team taking more than a two-point advantage the rest of the way. UWW fought off a Ram's match point with a Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) kill that made it 14-14. A Cornell attack error gave the Warhawks a match point 15-14 but three consecutive kills for the Rams shut the door.

Weinfurt led all players with 19 kills in the match. Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) posted 11 kills and added five blocks to lead the Warhawks defensively at the net. Four Warhawks registered double digit digs led by Morgan Jensen's (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) 22. Emma Bludgen (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley), KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) and Hailey Mackenthun (Webster, Minn./Northfield) tallied 15, 14 and 11 respectively. Jensen paced UWW from the service line with three aces in the match.

UW-Whitewater honored the 2022 senior class including Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge), Sotiros, Mackenthun, Jensen, Weinfurt and Johni Bunkers (Wildwood, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) before the match Saturday.

The Warhawks captured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title outright with a Friday night victory over UW-Eau Claire. The 18th title in program history also capped a perfect 7-0 season in conference play. UWW, the No. 1 seed for the WIAC Tournament, will host the winner of the #4/#5 seed Thursday in Russell Arena. The winner will advance to the WIAC Tournament Championship to be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
