The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's volleyball swept UW-Platteville 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-20) Thursday night to advance to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
The Warhawks, the number one seed entering the tournament after going unbeaten 7-0 in league play this season, will host UW-Stevens Point Saturday, November 5 at 7 p.m. in Russell Arena.
Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) sparked the UWW offense with a fantastic first set performance. The powerful outside hitter hammered down eight kills in 15 attempts while committing just one attack error for an attack percentage of .467. UWW hit .229 in the set while the defense held UWP to just .057.
Setters
KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) and
Emma Bludgen (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) spread the wealth in the second set with four Warhawk hitters including Weinfurt,
Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge),
Allyson Warburton (St. Charles, Ill./North) and
Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) registering three kills in the set. UWW increased their offensive efficiency to .243 while outblocking their opponents 3-0.
Weinfurt led the hitters again in the third set with five kills as the Warhawks hit .214. UWW put the pressure on the defense forcing a sideout percentage for the Pioneers of just 48% to seal the win.
For the match, Weinfurt was the lone hitter to post double digit kills with 16. She hit .353 for the match adding a pair of aces and a match-high six assist blocks. Sotiros dished out 22 assists and the league's best server added two more aces to her season tally.
Hannah Proctor (Durand, Ill./Durand) led all players at the net defensively with seven assist blocks. In the backcourt,
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) led UWW with 14 digs.
UW-Stevens Point advanced to the championship with a five-set win over the number two seed UW-Oshkosh in Oshkosh Thursday.
The Warhawks have advanced to the WIAC Tournament Championship nine consecutive seasons. In that span, UWW has faced the Pointers four times with UWSP leading the series 3-1.
