The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater doubles tandem of
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and
Luke VanDonslear (Marion, Iowa/Linn Mar) saw their Intercollegiate Athletic Association Cup Doubles run come to an end Friday afternoon in Rome, Georgia.
The pair met the Gustavus Adolphus squad they had topped in the ITA Midwest Regional Championship to advance to ITA Nationals. Drew Elofson and Gage Gohl evened the series against the Warhawks this time around winning 6-1, 6-3.
Zakowski and VanDonslear's third and final matchup of the tournament was against a duo from Hobart College. The Warhawks took an early lead in the first set until Hobart put together a small run and took set one 6-4. Set two was a similar set of circumstances leading to a tiebreak with Hobart winning 7-6(4).
The 2022 ITA Cup features over 250 student-athletes from across the country representing NCAA Division II and III, NAIA and junior colleges. Qualifiers for the tournament include regional champions and runners-up in addition to those earning at-large bids.

John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and
Luke VanDonslear (Marion, Iowa/Linn Mar) competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Cup National Doubles Championship Thursday in Rome, Georgia.
The Warhawk pair lost their opening round matchup to the number three seeded Vishwa Aduru and James Hopper of Case Western Reserve. UW-Whitewater took an early lead in the match winning the first set 6-3. CWR responded to even the match with a 1-6 win in set two.
The 10-point tiebreak was a close battle. Case Western Reserve took a 4-3 advantage and held on to win 10-7 to advance.
The Warhawk duo will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of matches in the back draw. Zakowski and VanDonslear will open Friday against the Gustavus Adolphus squad they defeated in the ITA Midwest Regional Championship on October 3.
