Day 1 Results
The No. 11 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team remains alive in four brackets and is ninth after the first day of the annual Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational in Wheaton, Ill.
The Warhawks enter the final day of the tournament with 50.5 team points, only 5.5 points out of fourth place and less than 15 short of third.
Three UW-Whitewater wrestlers are set to compete in the semifinals at their respective weight classes.
Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) tallied two victories on the day, including a 6-5 decision against nationally ranked Andrew Perelka of John Carroll (Ohio), to advance to the final four at 133 pounds. He will take on UW-Eau Claire's Tyler Fleetwood with a trip to the championship bout on the line.
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) earned two decisions at 149 pounds to set up a semifinal bout against nationally ranked Chase Sumner of Ohio Northern.
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) will compete in Saturday's semifinals at 184 pounds after tallying one major decision and one pin. He will face Brian Torres of SUNY Cortland.
Dakarai Clay (Madison, Wis./Madison East) remains alive in the consolation bracket at 141 pounds. He finished 3-1 Friday with his lone loss coming against nationally ranked Jordin James of Mount Union (Ohio) by decision. Clay will take on Levi Englman of Ferrum (Va.) in his next bout.
Competition resumes Saturday at 11 a.m.
