Men First, Women Third at Karl Schlender Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams started the 2022 indoor season Saturday by hosting the annual Karl Schlender Invitational at Kachel Fieldhouse.
 
The Warhawk men edged Loras (Iowa) with 195 points to top the six-team field, while the women placed third out of six teams with 92 points.
 
Curtis Pfeil (West Bend, Wis./West) turned in a standout performance to lead the men in field events, sweeping the long jump and triple jump. He recorded personal record marks in both events, posting a 23.08.75 (7.23 meters) in the long jump and a 48-06.25 (14.79 meters) in the triple jump.
 
Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) earned first place in both throwing events, winning the shot put with a 48-03.25 (14.71 meters) and the weight throw with a 55-00.00 (16.76 meters).
 
Chris Bitz (Brookfield, Wis./East) finished second in the pole vault with a height of 13-11.25 (4.25 meters).
 
Victor Rinaldi (Medford, Wis./Medford) claimed the 200-meter dash in 22.30 seconds. He also posted the meet's top time in the 60-meter dash with a 6.97 in the prelims. Teammate D'Angelo Dear (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) won the final with a time of 7.01.
 
Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) finished first in the 1-mile run with his time of 4:18.32, and fellow distance runner Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) placed second in the 600-meter run in 1:23.83. Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) earned a runner-up finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.43.
 
The Warhawks' distance medley relay team of David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger), Will Kaashagen (Cambridge, Wis./Cambridge), Sam Uhrich (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) and Conner Hackett (Darlington, Wis./Darlington) ran a 10:42.62, good for second place and currently the fourth-fastest time in NCAA Division III.
 
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) led the women with a first place showing in the pole vault. She tallied a height of 11-05.75 (3.50 meters).
 
Runners-up included Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) and Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego). Fassbender ran a time of 1:39.89 in the 600-meter run, while Missiaen collected a mark of 17-01.25 (5.21 meters) in the long jump.
 
Other top-five finishers included Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee), Rialey Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) and Rebecca Lawrence (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander). De La Cerda placed fourth in the 1-mile run in 5:37.47, while Martin's throw of 42-06.25 (12.96 meters) was the fourth best in the weight throw. Lawrence cleared a height of 4-09.50 (1.46 meters) in the high jump for fifth place.
 
UW-Whitewater hosts the annual "Squig" Converse Invitational Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29, at Kachel Fieldhouse.
