The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team won its third consecutive road match to start the 2021 season Wednesday with a 2-0 victory at Millikin (Ill.).
The Warhawks (3-0 overall) held advantages over the Big Blue in shots (16-10), shots on goal (8-5) and corner kicks (7-3) on their way to a second straight win by shutout.
The two teams exchanged pressure in the first half.
Will Hamilton (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) and
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) put shots on goal in the 18th and 20th minutes, respectively, and
Jacob Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) added another shot on net that was saved in the 40th minute.
UW-Whitewater broke through in the 71st minute.
Matthew Waters (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) found the back of the net on a free kick from 25 yards out, tallying what held up as the game-winning goal.
The Warhawks put two more shots on goal over the next 10 minutes, and in the 83rd minute, Wright took advantage of a Millikin foul and scored on a penalty kick to double the team's lead.
UW-W held the Big Blue (0-3) to one shot the rest of the way to remain unbeaten on the season.
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) totaled five saves for his second shutout of the year.
The Warhawks host St. John's (Minn.) this Saturday for their first match at Fiskum Field since Oct. 25, 2019. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
