Women’s Soccer Tops Augsburg Behind Big Night from Brodjian

Playing at home for the first time in two weeks and just the second time this season, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team put forth a complete performance Saturday, topping Augsburg (Minn.) 3-1 in a non-conference match at Fiskum Field.

Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) posted two goals and one assist to lead the Warhawks (5-3 overall), who kept the pressure on in the Auggies' back third throughout the contest.

UW-Whitewater drew a pair of corner kicks over the first 10 minutes, and continued to play aggressively in the early going, earning a third corner in the 22nd minute. Less than one minute later, Brodjian connected for her fist goal of the day, converting a header on a free kick from Katie Swenson (Wauwatosa, Wis./East).

Two minutes after a corner kick by Augsburg (4-3-1) in the 25th minute, Olivia May (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn Area) took a pass from Brodjian and finished past the keeper, who had come out of net in an attempt to disrupt the play.

The two teams combined for three shots over the final 20 minutes of the first half, and the Warhawks held a 2-0 halftime advantage.

UW-W continued its offensive pressure, collecting three shots and three corner kicks over the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Brodjian found her second tally in the 63rd minute, converting on a feed from Carli Nehls (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) to give the Warhawks a 3-0 advantage and pick up her team-leading eighth goal of the year.

Augsburg cut the lead to 3-1 on a free kick goal in the 75th, but UW-Whitewater didn't allow a shot the rest of the way, maintaining the two-goal advantage on its way to the win.

The Warhawks finished with advantages in shots (17-8), shots on goal (8-3) and corners (10-1).

UW-Whitewater hosts Viterbo this Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. for a non-conference match at Fiskum Field.

UW-W recognized its 30th anniversary of women's soccer at halftime of the game. The following announcement was read to recognize the many alumnae in attendance:

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team celebrates 30 years of the program's existence in 2021. Since the team began play in 1992, the Warhawks have compiled 326 wins, and have won more than 61 percent of their matches both overall and in conference play. UW-Whitewater has made eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including a berth in the national quarterfinals in 2015 and trips to the Sweet 16 in 2011 and 2016. The Warhawks have won seven WIAC regular season championships and five conference tournament titles during that span.

Beyond all of the numbers, accolades and championships on the field, the UW-Whitewater women's soccer program has molded successful young women who are making a difference in the world. Their commitment to the program's pillars of respect, accountability, commitment and discipline is apparent in the families they've built, the careers they've undertaken and the impact they've made on their communities. We thank all of our alumnae, coaches, support staff members and administrators for making the UW-Whitewater program what it is today – a model collegiate women's soccer program and a perennial conference, regional and national contender.
