The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team opened play Friday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional and Midwest Open at the Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex and other sites in Whitewater, Jefferson and Janesville.
 
The Warhawks advanced four players to the third round of the 96-player singles draw of the ITA Regional. No. 7 seed Autumn Bruno (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield Whitnall), No. 11 Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) and No. 14 Gianna Nikoleit (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) each won in straight sets in their lone matches of the day after earning first-round byes.
 
Madalyn Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) also moved on to the third round with a victory against Edgewood in the first round and a win by super tiebreaker against Carleton in the second.
 
Bruno and Lee, the ninth-seeded doubles team, claimed their lone match of the day to set up a Round of 16 showdown against seventh-seeded Gustavus Adolphus. Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) and Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) topped Carthage 8-3 before posting an 8-6 triumph against No. 3 Macalester to advance to the third round.
 
In the Midwest Open, Bryce Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper), MacKenzie Lindow (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and Sarah Ferguson (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) are on to the semifinals of the "A", "E" and "G" singles draws, respectively. Zenia Baretto and Sarah Ferguson (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) punched their ticket to the "A" doubles draw semifinals thanks to a win against Coe.
 
Play at the ITA Midwest Regional and Midwest Open continues Saturday at 9 a.m.
