No. 8 Volleyball Tops No. 24 Carthage

The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team remained unbeaten at home and posted its fourth win against a nationally-ranked opponent Friday night with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 victory against No. 24 Carthage in a non-conference match at Russell Arena.
 
The Warhawks (9-1 overall) tallied a .313 hitting percentage for the match and hit above a .350 in each of the first two sets.
 
Morgan Wardall (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) totaled 10 kills on a .692 hitting percentage and added a pair of blocks. Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) collected a team-high 11 kills to go with three digs and two blocks, and Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) recorded eight kills on a .467 hitting percentage.
 
Emma Aske (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) finished with seven kills and nine digs, while Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) contributed six kills. KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) registered 25 assists and three digs, and Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) amassed 16 assists and five digs.
 
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) led the defense with 16 digs to go with a team-best three service aces.
 
Carthage (10-6) held a 9-5 advantage in the first set before UW-W ran off five straight points on Sotiros' serve for a 10-9 lead.
 
The Firebirds led 17-14, but the Warhawks rallied again to tie the set at 18-18. From there, the two teams exchanged points before UW-W clinched two set points, taking the second for a 1-0 match lead.
 
UW-Whitewater grabbed a 12-7 advantage in the second set on the serves of Anderson and Hailey Mackenthun (Webster, Minn./Northfield), and a 6-0 run later on Jensen's serve made it 20-10. From there, the two teams traded points before the Warhawks ended the set on a kill by Aske.
 
In the third, Jensen's serve helped turn a 17-16 lead into a 21-16 advantage. Carthage fended off three match points, but UW-W was able to secure its seventh home win of the season.
 
The Warhawks continue the UW-Whitewater Invitational at Russell Arena Saturday with matches against St. Mary's (Minn.) and Carroll at 12 and 4 p.m., respectively.
