Men’s Soccer Wins Thriller at Loras

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team remained unbeaten for the 2021 season Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory at Loras (Iowa) in double overtime.

Tucker Jahns (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) converted the game-winner in the 104th minute to give the Warhawks (5-0-1 overall) their fourth true road win this year. Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) earned the assist on the play.

The match was back and forth over the first 15 minutes of action.

The Duhawks (5-2-1) struck first in the game on a penalty kick goal in the seventh minute, but UW-Whitewater responded in the 11th minute on an Alec Sykes (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis Hale) goal, his third of the season, on an assist from Matthew Waters (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South).

The Warhawks took the lead in the 13th minute as Waters found the back of the net off a pass from Zack Kristy (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township), but Loras leveled the match again with a goal in the 15th minute on another penalty kick.

The two teams exchanged shots over the next 20 minutes, but the Duhawks found control over the last 10 minutes of the half. Loras earned three corner kicks over the last five minutes of the period, but the UW-W defense stood firm to maintain the tie heading into halftime.

The Duhawks continued to apply pressure to the Warhawks' back third in the second half, tallying four more corner kicks and eight shots in the period. Goalkeeper Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) recorded a save in the 87th minute to keep the score at 2-2, and the match headed to overtime.

UW-Whitewater turned back six Loras shots in the first OT to force the second extra period.

The two teams exchanged shots just past the 100-minute mark before Jahns found the golden goal.

King finished with five saves over 103-plus minutes to improve to 3-0-1 on the year.

The Warhawks continue their three-match road swing this Friday at Washington-St. Louis. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
