The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team set the tone with an early goal and controlled play Tuesday night on its way to a 5-0 triumph against Monmouth (Ill.) in a match at Fiskum Field.
The Warhawks (4-0-1 overall) tallied three first-half goals and two more in the second to stay unbeaten for the year and record their third shutout of the year.
UW-Whitewater finished with 19 shots, including 12 on goal, while holding the Fighting Scots (0-3-2) to four shots, including one on goal.
Alec Sykes (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis Hale) started the scoring for the Warhawks, taking a pass from
Elliot Busch (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) right in front of the net and finishing past the keeper for what proved to be the game-winning goal in the fourth minute.
Jacob Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) doubled the UW-W lead in the 26th minute, and
Tucker Jahns (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) made it a three-goal game in the 42nd minute off an assist from Mouille.
The Warhawks posted two more shots in the period around one of their five corner kicks in the contest, but their 3-0 lead stood into halftime.
Fionnbharr Hartnett (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) scored the first goal of the second half off an assist from Alec Williett in the 59th minute. Jahns accounted for the final margin with his second goal on Busch's second assist of the night in the 80th minute.
Duncan Morgan (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) and
Matthew Vollmer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) combined for the shutout, playing 45 minutes apiece. Vollmer registered the lone save of the night by a UW-W goalkeeper.
The Warhawks play their second of four matches this week Wednesday at Loras. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Dubuque, Iowa.
