The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team will play a two-game, home-and-home series during the 2022 and 2023 regular seasons against fellow 2019 NCAA Division III national semifinalist St. John's (Minn.).
The Warhawks will travel to Collegeville, Minn., on Sept. 10, 2022, to take on the Johnnies. The series concludes Sept. 9, 2023, as St. John's and UW-Whitewater play at Perkins Stadium.
UW-Whitewater and St. John's are two of the winningest programs in NCAA Division III history. The Johnnies' .717 winning percentage in their 109-year history in Division III ranks second all time, while the Warhawks' .698 winning percentage over 95 years ranks fourth.
The two teams have combined for eight national championships all time. SJU claimed titles in 1976 and 2003, and UW-W earned Stagg Bowl victories in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.
In 2019, the Warhawks edged the Johnnies 35-32 in a thrilling national semifinal game at Perkins Stadium. Wojciech Gasienica hit a 37-yard field goal with 2:10 remaining to put UW-Whitewater ahead, and Matt Anderson posted an interception on the ensuring St. John's drive to seal the Warhawk win.
The Warhawks lead the all-times series between the two teams, 4-1. Each of the last four meetings has come in the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
UW-Whitewater and St. John's each had offensive linemen taken recently in the National Football League Draft. The Johnnies' Ben Bartsch was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Warhawks' Quinn Meinerz was taken in the third round of the 2021 Draft by the Denver Broncos. Both players started in the 2019 national semifinal.
