The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team overcame an early deficit Saturday for a 5-4 victory over UW-Eau Claire in a New Jersey Athletic Conference West Division dual at Wangerin Courts.
Trailing 3-1 early in singles play, the Warhawks (8-1 overall) claimed the next five matches to clinch their seventh straight dual victory.
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
Jake Macey (Southampton, England/King Edwards VI) combined for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles for the first team point of the dual. The Blugolds picked up the next two points in doubles contests for a 2-1 advantage.
UW-Eau Claire (8-2) added another point to its team total before UW-Whitewater ran off five straight decisions.
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) started the run with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 singles. Macey tied the dual with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the top singles slot.
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) put the Warhawks ahead for good with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3, and Gray clinched the dual for UW-W with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 triumph at the second position.
UW-Whitewater hosts UW-La Crosse for another NJAC West Division showdown Sunday starting at 1 p.m. at Wangerin Courts.
