Track and Field Teams Close Indoor Season

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams posted several strong performances Saturday at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Last Chance Meet, the 2021 indoor season finale, inside Kachel Fieldhouse.
 
Team scores were not compiled for the meet.
 
On the men's side, the Warhawks placed four in the top seven in the 3,000-meter run, led by David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger), who won the event with a season-best 8:19.39, which ranks among the top five in NCAA Division III.
 
Other event winners included Christian Seagren (Dixon, Ill./Dixon), who won the 5,000-meter run in 15:41.85, and Curtis Pfeil (West Bend, Wis./West), who finished first in the long jump with his distance of 22-10.50 (6.97 meters).
 
Josh Krystosek (Palmyra, Wis./Palmyra-Eagle), Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) and Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) placed second in their respective events. Krystosek tallied a height of 6-06.00 (1.98 meters) in the high jump, while Martin improved his season best in the weight throw with a mark of 59-02.00 (18.03 meters), good for a top 10 national distance. Krause surged into the nation's top 15 with his personal record of 4:14.77 in the 1-mile run.
 
Dwayne Ford (Racine, Wis./Case) improved his national top 10 time to 6.89 in the 60-meter dash, good for third place. Shelvin Garrett posted a career-best 46-10.25 (14.28 meters) in the triple jump to place third and move up among the top 10 in Division III. Brayden Zettle (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) improved to 46-06.75 (14.19 meters) in the same event, good for third place and a national top 10 distance.
 
On the women's side, Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield), who ranks among the top 10 in NCAA Division III in the pole vault, tied for third in the event with her height of 3.51 meters. The Warhawks' distance medley relay team of Jessie Braun (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine), Alex Handchetz (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley), Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy) and Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) combined for a third-place finish in the distance medley relay, completing the race in 12:55.11.
 
Maddie Keifer (Maple Park, Ill./Kaneland) secured fifth place in the triple jump with a mark of 36-09.50 (11.21 meters). Shelby Nickels (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln), who ranks among the top 10 in the nation in the long jump, tied for sixth with a mark of 18-00.50 (5.50 meters).
 
UW-Whitewater's outdoor season is slated to begin March 27 with a home meet at Rex Foster Track. Full details of the meet will be announced prior to the 27th.
