The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team recovered from a slow start Sunday afternoon to defeat Bethel (Minn.) 5-4 in a non-conference dual at the YMCA in Eau Claire, Wis.
After dropping two of three doubles matches, the Warhawks (4-5 overall) took four of six in singles, clinching the dual with one match still at large.
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) and
Olivia Kraft (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) captured a doubles point for UW-Whitewater with an 8-2 triumph at the No. 2 position. The Royals (4-3) took a 2-1 lead after taking the first and third slots.
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) put the Warhawks on the board in singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) followed suit at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Jessica Minkov (Schiller Park, Ill./East Leyden) gave UW-W a 4-2 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 6 singles. After a point was secured for Bethel, the Warhawks clinched the dual thanks to a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) victory by Nierman at the second singles position.
UW-Whitewater begins Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition Saturday with matches at UW-Stout and UW-River Falls at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
