The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2021 season Sunday with a 9-0 sweep at Augustana (Ill.) in a dual at Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Ill.
The Warhawks got on the board thanks to an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles by
Noah Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) and
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East). The No. 3 pairing of
Parker Hearne (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) followed suit with an 8-3 triumph to give UW-W a 2-0 advantage.
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
Jake Macey (Southampton, England/King Edwards VI) claimed the pro-set tiebreaker on their way to an 8-7 (6) victory at No. 1 doubles to put UW-Whitewater ahead, 3-0.
Mitchell was first to finish in singles, tallying a 6-0, 6-1 win at the fourth position. Gray clinched the dual with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph at the second position.
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Brayden Kopp (Roselle, Ill./Bellbrook (Ohio)) were victorious in straight sets at the fifth and sixth positions, respectively, surrendering a combined five games in their matches.
Lindwall posted a 7-5, 6-3 win in the third slot, and Macey wrapped up the dual with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at the No. 1 spot.
The Warhawks return to the court Saturday at North Central (Ill.). First serve is set for 4 p.m. at Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Ill.
