The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team topped an in-state rival Friday, defeating Carthage 8-1 in a dual match at Lake Geneva Tennis.
The Warhawks (2-1 overall) dropped one doubles match before sweeping the six singles matches, including four in straight sets.
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) combined for an 8-1 triumph at No. 1 doubles, and
Parker Hearne (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) and
Brayden Kopp (Roselle, Ill./Bellbrook (Ohio)) followed suit with an 8-5 win at the third position. Carthage (0-2) took the No. 2 doubles match in a tiebreaker.
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) put UW-W on the board in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4. Gray made it a 4-1 team advantage with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph at No. 1, and Mitchell clinched the dual with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3.
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) came back from one set down for a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) victory at the second slot. Kopp added to the margin with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 5, and
Josh Baldwin (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) completed the night with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 6.
UW-Whitewater returns to Lake Geneva Tennis next week Saturday, Feb. 27, to host Millikin (Ill.). First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
