The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team overcame a slow start in doubles Saturday to defeat Luther (Iowa) 5-4 in the 2021 season-opening dual for both teams at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva.
The Warhawks (1-0 overall) took four of six singles contests, clinching the match on a 6-2, 6-4 victory by
Noah Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) at No. 6 singles.
Luther (0-1) took two of the three doubles matches. Guillermo and
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) earned the lone doubles win for UW-Whitewater by an 8-6 margin at the second position.
Mitchell,
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Brayden Kopp (Roselle, Ill./Bellbrook (Ohio)) joined Guillermo as winners in singles play. Mitchell posted a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 3, and Pietila recorded a 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory at No. 4.
Making his Warhawk debut, Kopp cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 to set Guillermo up for the decisive team point.
UW-Whitewater returns to Lake Geneva Tennis Sunday for a dual against Cardinal Stritch, a member of the NAIA. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
