The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team hosts Greenville (Ill.) for a first round game of the NCAA Division III Championship this Saturday at 12 p.m. at Perkins Stadium. The Warhawks are an automatic qualifier out of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Panthers are the automatic qualifier out of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
The Warhawks surrendered a first-quarter field goal before tallying 28 unanswered points last Saturday in a 56-10 victory at UW-Stevens Point. UW-W totaled 599 yards, including a season-high 370 on the ground, and held the Pointers to 183 total yards, including 41 on the ground at a 1.7 yards-per-carry clip. UW-Whitewater wrapped up its first unbeaten regular season since 2018 and clinched the WIAC championship outright.
The Warhawks remained at No. 3 in the latest D3football.com Top 25, earning 580 points from pollsters without receiving a first-place vote. UW-W is also third in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division III Coaches' Poll, picking up 1,080 points and one first-place vote from panelists. The team was ranked second in the Lindy's Sports Preseason Division III Top 25 and fourth in the preseason by College Football America.
Greenville scored 26 second-quarter points and compiled 514 total yards, including 336 on the ground, last Saturday in a 47-21 triumph against Minnesota-Morris to clinch the UMAC championship and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Playoffs. Paul Garrett led the offense with 23 carries for 227 yards and three touchdowns, and Greg Urbanc finished with 12 tackles to pace the defense, which held Minnesota-Morris to 80 rushing yards.
