No. 9 Volleyball Tops No. 23 WashU

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team extended its active win streak to eight matches Friday night with a 25-21, 17-25, 25-15, 25-22 victory at No. 23 Washington-St. Louis.
 
The Warhawks (16-1 overall) out-hit the Bears .205 to .184 and held a 7-4 edge in blocks to come away with the win.
 
Erin McNeil (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) led the offense with 13 kills on a .353 hitting percentage, while Jenna Weinfurt (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) contributed 10 kills, four digs and two blocks.
 
Morgan Wardall (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) tallied five kills and three blocks, and Kirsten Anderson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) collected five kills, three blocks, three digs and two service aces.
 
KellyAnn Sotiros (New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale) finished with 20 assists, five digs and two service aces, while Paige Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill./McHenry West) posted eight assists, five digs and one service ace.
 
Morgan Jensen (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) led the defense with 25 digs to go with four assists. Hailey Mackenthun (Webster, Minn./Northfield) recorded six digs and one service ace.
 
WashU (10-6) took a 13-7 advantage in the first set and led 17-12 before UW-Whitewater mounted its comeback, making runs on Anderson's and Sotiros' serve for a 19-18 lead.
 
The Bears tied the set at 19-19, but a kill by McNeil on the next point gave UW-W the lead for good. Mackenthun served for a majority of the team's 5-1 run to 24-20, and, two points later, Wardall ended the set with a kill.
 
The Warhawks never led in the second set. WashU sprinted out to a 10-2 advantage and led in the set by as many as 12 points. UW-W drew to within 22-17 on Manssen's serve, but the Bears scored the next three points to close out the set and level the match at 1-1.
 
UW-Whitewater took the momentum back early in the third, taking an 8-2 lead on Jensen's serve. After WashU drew to within 12-8, the Warhawks scored eight of the next nine points on the serves of Aske and Jensen. Anderson ended the set with a kill.
 
The two teams exchanged runs in the fourth. UW-Whitewater led 8-4, but the Bears flipped the margin to their favor, taking an 18-14 lead.
 
Mackenthun served the Warhawks to a 4-0 run, and the two teams exchanged points before Anderson served UW-W to a 23-19 lead. WashU drew to within 24-22, but UW-Whitewater was able to close out the match on the next point.
 
The Warhawks continue play in St. Louis Saturday as they take on Illinois Wesleyan at 10:30 a.m. and Greenville (Ill.) at 1 p.m.
