Men’s Soccer Tops In-State Foe

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team gained the lead early Wednesday night and maintained it throughout the match in a 3-2 victory at Carroll.

The Warhawks (9-2-1 overall), ranked third in Region IX by the United Soccer Coaches, tallied two goals in the first 20 minutes of action and held on despite a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes by the Pioneers.

UW-Whitewater held advantages in corner kicks (9-5) and shots (13-9). Goalkeeper Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) finished with three saves to earn the win.

The two teams exchanged shots and corner kicks early before Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) put UW-W on the board in the 14th minute.

Five minutes later, Jacob Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) doubled the lead with his seventh goal of the season in the 19th minute. Jalen Holley (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) and Mariano Carini (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) earned assists on the play.

The Warhawks earned three corner kicks in the final 10-plus minutes of the first half, but were unable to add to the lead.

Carroll drew to within one in the 79th minute, but UW-Whitewater responded just over two minutes later as Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute for a goal that proved to be the game-winner.

The Pioneers drew to within one on a penalty kick in the 86th minute, but the Warhawks didn't allow a shot the rest of the way, holding on for their seventh road win of the season.

UW-W continues its road swing Saturday at Viterbo. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. in La Crosse.
