The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team reached the 10-win mark for the eighth straight season Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 triumph at Macalester (Minn.).
The Warhawks (10-3-1 overall) tallied a pair of first-half goals and added an insurance goal late in the second half to put a cap on a week that saw them play four matches, all on the road, over a seven-day stretch.
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) posted what held as the game-winning goal in the 19th minute, taking a pass from
Mariano Carini (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) for his third goal of the year and a 1-0 UW-Whitewater lead.
Macalester (6-6) responded with three corner kicks over the next two minutes, but the Warhawks maintained their advantage.
The two teams traded offensive attacks before UW-W doubled its lead on a goal by
Devin Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) on an assist from Wright in the 39th minute.
The Warhawks and Scots played evenly through the first 30 minutes of the second half before UW-Whitewater found the back of the net again.
Jacob Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) recorded his team-leading eighth goal of the year in the 78th minute.
Goalkeeper
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) registered his third shutout of the season with a season-high six saves over 90 minutes of action.
The two teams each finished with 11 shots in the match, with UW-W holding a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Warhawks totaled six corner kicks, and the Scots recorded five.
On Saturday afternoon, UW-Whitewater fell behind early and was unable to make a comeback in a 4-2 loss at Viterbo, an NAIA opponent.
The Warhawks played the unbeaten V-Hawks evenly throughout the match, holding a 17-16 edge in shots, including a 10-7 margin in shots on goal.
Andres Villarreal (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) scored in the 53rd minute on an assist from Howard to cut the UW-W deficit to 2-1. After a Viterbo goal in the 76th,
Tucker Jahns (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) responded with an unassisted goal to bring the Warhawks within one again.
Minutes later, the V-Hawks regained their two-goal advantage.
UW-Whitewater continues its eight-match road swing Tuesday at Beloit. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
