The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scored three goals in an eight-minute span in the second half Wednesday night to break a level match and emerge with a 4-1 victory at UW-Platteville in the annual Shaymus Guinn Cup rivalry match.
The Warhawks (14-5-1 overall) completed the regular season on a three-match winning streak and will find out Monday morning where they land for the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, which is being held next week in Fredericksburg, Va.
The two teams traded shots over the first 25 minutes before the Pioneers (12-4-2) started to pressure the UW-W defense. After six UW-Platteville shots over an eight-minute span, UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead on a goal by
Jalen Holley (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) on an assist from
Andres Villarreal (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) with 33 seconds to play in the first half.
The Pioneers leveled the match just under two minutes into the second half and kept the pressure on the Warhawks over the next 10 minutes.
After the two teams traded shots on goal, UW-W earned two corner kicks in a two-mintue span, following the second with a goal by
Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North), his sixth of the season, on an assist from
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) in the 63rd minute.
Just over one minute later, UW-Whitewater doubled its lead to 3-1 on a goal by
Devin Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome), his fourth of the year.
The Warhawks added another goal in the 71st minute as Holley found the back of the net for the second time in the match and the third time this season off a corner kick from Wright.
Goalkeeper
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) tallied six saves over the final 17-plus minutes of action to preserve the lead. He finished with nine saves for the contest.
Holley, Howard,
Alec Sykes (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis Hale) and
Faizan Mohiuddin (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) each posted two shots in the match.
