The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team closed out its second straight season unbeaten at home Saturday night with an 8-0 victory against Augustana (Ill.) on Senior Day at Fiskum Field.
The Warhawks (13-5-1 overall) tallied four goals in the first half and four more in the second for the team's highest scoring output since Oct. 12, 2011, in an 8-0 win at Finlandia (Mich.).
UW-Whitewater also recognized its six seniors prior to the match –
Jake Farley (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North),
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West),
Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North),
Alec Sykes (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis Hale),
Matthew Waters (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) and
Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake).
Pumo, Sykes and
Alec Willett (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) each finished with two goals to lead the offense. King and
Duncan Morgan (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) combined for the shutout in goal.
The Warhawks set the tone early, earning three corner kicks in the first six minutes of action. The Vikings (4-10) also took a corner during that span.
UW-Whitewater's first two shots on goal were saved before Sykes found the back of the net for what held as the game-winner in the 22nd minute.
Pumo doubled the UW-W lead four minutes later on an assist from Wright. Two minutes after that, Sykes found another goal on a pass from
Jacob Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) to make it a 3-0 match.
King made his first of two saves in the 31st minute. In the 42nd, Pumo increased the Warhawks' lead again with his second goal of the match and his fifth of the season.
UW-Whitewater featured a new lineup in the second half and kept the pressure on the Augustana defense. Eight minutes into the period, Willett recorded his first goal on an assist from
Jalen Holley (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) to increase the UW-W lead to five.
Holley and Willett connected again in the 72nd minute, and Holley capped a four-point night with a goal in the 79th minute.
Will Morgan (Naperville, Ill./Central) closed the scoring in the 85th minute with an unassisted goal.
The Warhawks finish the regular season at UW-Platteville Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the annual Shaymus Guinn Cup.
