The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to the pool for the start of the 2021-22 regular season Saturday against Illinois Tech at the Williams Center Pool.
The Warhawk women edged the visiting Scarlett Hawks 96-94, while the men were narrowly defeated by a 112-90 margin.
Individual event winners for the women included
Morgan Nabors (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley),
Amanda Harper (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and
Gianna Gnewuch (Madison, Wis./Verona Area). Harper and Nabors placed first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, respectively. Harper won her race in 26.82 seconds, while Nabors touched the wall in 57.59 seconds.
Gnewuch placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.95. She added a runner-up finish in the 200-yard individual medley, completing the race in 2:21.68.
Brianna Zimdars (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) earned two runner-up finishes in distance freestyle events, completing the 500 in 5:53.00 and the 1,000 in 12:03.53.
Gnewuch,
Anna Yeazel (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater), Nabors and
Ciara Hynes (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) combined for a first-place showing in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.29.
On the men's side,
Tyler Popke (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie),
Zach Miller (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington),
Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore),
Hunter Hayberger (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) and
Joe Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual Learning) claimed victories in individual events.
Popke won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.41, while Miller took the 50-yard freestyle in 22.98 seconds. Gramer placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.16 seconds, and Hayberger topped the field in the 200-yard freestyle with his 1:49.97 and added a runner-up finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.39).
Wenszell collected a time of 2:05.18 in the 200-yard individual medley to beat out seven other competitors.
Gramer, Miller,
Anthony Mrozowski (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Wenszell teamed up to finish first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 1:30.00. Miller, Popke, Wenszell and Gramer combined for a 1:39.62 in the 200-yard medley relay, good for first place in the event.
The Warhawks visit UW-Oshkosh for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m.
