The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team posted a strong performance in the first half Saturday afternoon but was unable to sustain its lead in a 2-1 setback at UW-Eau Claire.
The Warhawks (11-4-1 overall) finished with more shots (12-10) and corner kicks (4-3) than the Blugolds, but UW-Eau Claire tallied the equalizing goal in the second half and found the game-winner in overtime.
UW-Whitewater controlled play early in the first half, putting two shots on goal and earning a pair of corner kicks in the first six minutes of action.
Alec Sykes (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis Hale) put the team on the board in the 25th minute for a 1-0 advantage.
The Warhawks put two more shots on target in the period, but both were saved by the Blugolds.
UW-Eau Claire (10-2) tied the match in the 56th minute.
UW-Whitewater quickly countered with two shots on goal in the next seven minutes, but the Blugolds responded with a shot on target just over seven minutes later.
The two teams exchanged chances over the final 20 minutes. Sykes put the final shot on goal of regulation with 45 seconds to play.
In extra time, UW-Eau Claire attempted the only two shots of the overtime. The second found the back of the net in the 96th minute.
Jake King (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) totaled four saves in goal for the Warhawks.
UW-Whitewater plays its eighth consecutive road match Sunday at Gustavus Adolphus. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
